Jerome, Arizona - A Photographer's Paradise
One of my favorite photography locations is the town of Jerome, Arizona. It's located on top of Cleopatra Hill, between Prescott and Flagstaff, and was once know as the wickedest town in the West. The cooler climate (at 5,200 feet), and only a 90 minute drive North from Phoenix, makes Jerome a perfect day trip getaway!
Jerome sits above what was the largest copper mine in Arizona and produced an astonishing 3 million pounds of copper per month. Today the mines are silent, and Jerome has become the "largest ghost town in America".
From its external appearances it hasn’t changed much in nearly 100 years.
Jerome is now a bustling destination / artistic community with a population of about 450. It is a very diverse mixture of artists, musicians, writers, hermits, gift shop proprietors and a photographer's paradise!
If you decide to make to 90 minute drive up, I highly recommend The Haunted Hamburger (Jerome Palace) as one of the best places to eat in town. Another recommendation, although pretty pricey (but worth it!), is The Asylum Restaurant.
